(Myanmar) Aver Asia has invested in Myanmar since 2014 and it has grown from a humble fleet of 8 units to 170 units of Mobile Elevated Work Platforms(MEWP) & other machinery in Yangon today. We’re not stopping there. Its Singapore HQ has 4,500 Rental Equipment, and as Mr Maverick Yeo, General Manager of Aver Asia Cambodia and Myanmar sees it, “In a big country like Myanmar, there is a lot more room for a business like ours to grow. And we will continue to expand our capacity.”

INDUSTRY MENTORS’ NETWORK

(Singapore) We always believe that we lift them up today as they are our tomorrow. Youths are our tomorrow. Just imagine, does it make any sense to “dump” the wisdom, experience and technical know-hows in the likes of Mr Ng and Dion; if not, will it be better for us to transfer them to the next generation? (I know what you’re thinking, many mini-Dions may be quite nerve-wracking)

The Industry Mentors’ Network (IMN) is a joint-polytechnic initiative started in 2015 to connect tertiary students with industry professionals for career guidance and industry network opportunities. The IMN framework is designed to enhance the knowledge sharing, exploring activities, engagements, and importantly, close in on the gaps of the career options, expectations, and job market. To date, over 6,000 students have benefited from this program.

As a former intern, lecturer and head of department, I have taken an all-round position to internship. When we knock ambition, wants and needs onto a cold hard steel, there will be harsh realities. Yet, it is also this very same discovery that lead us to find some gems for the industry; and unknowingly, re-ignite the passion and purpose of our old flames like Mike, Ali, Harry, Dyn and Vincent. They have much to share.

On 8 November 2018, Mr T K Ng, Plant Manager, signed the Memorandum of Understanding for IMN 2019 as the appointee of Aver Asia. We are one of the 66 participating corporate partners. Next year, you will expect batches of interns joining us in our Singapore office. Do have coffee with them, talk to them, guide them when they make mistakes, and inspire them with your story.

(Singapore) Is a known fact that in Aver Asia’s home base, laws are more stringent than the other parts of Asia. On legislative intent relating to workplace safety, which is close to our hearts, the High Court has just upped the sentencing from paying fines to serving jail terms.

On Friday, 2 Nov, a judge has handed down the first jail sentence – 25 weeks’ jail over negligence on the safety of workers in the Fusionopolis worksite accident in 2014.

The construction foreman has instructed his workers to load an air compressor onto a loading platform that was suspended on the edge of the seventh floor of a building. The platform was not properly secured and suspended by a tower crane.

When the air compressor was loaded on the platform, it rolled away from the edge of the building. Two workers standing on the platform fell out of the building together with the air compressor.

The unfortunate accident resulted in the death of two workers.

The High Court judge and law practitioners have evaluated and conclude that past sentences on workplace safety breaches were too light. Since 2011, for all the past workplace accidents which resulted in death, the accused persons received fines in the range of $5,000 to $12,000.

Under the Workplace Safety and Health Act, a person who carries out a negligent act that endangers the safety of himself or others at work can be fined up to $30,000 or jailed for up to 2 years, or both.

In sending the construction foreman to jail for 25 weeks, the judge has laid out sentencing guidelines for future cases. The provision must have sufficient deterrent effect to ensure that people comply with workplace safety rules.

If death is caused, an additional 8 to 40 weeks’ jail is added, depending on the number of fatalities. For serious injuries, an additional sentence of up to 10 weeks’ jail may be added.

Another reason to visit Malaysia in 2019

(Malaysia) Genting Highlands was always my favorite (and the only) holiday spot when I was a kid. For a Singaporean family, it is the lowest-priced place to still feel the chill.

The family attraction offered many recreational activities such as arcades, bowling alley, cinemas, and massive outdoor theme parks.

What makes it really special is the “cool effect” high up in the mountains.

The upcoming movie-inspired theme park will spread joy to the next generation of young families. The 20^th Century FOX World will become the only functioning 20^th Century theme park in the world and the first in Asia upon completion by 2019.

250 acres in size, 25 thrill rides and attractions based on films that are unquestionably familiar to us, including Ice Age, Titanic, Night at the Museum, Planet of the Apes, etc. Aver Asia Rental Sdn Bhd was engaged to support the construction of the new theme park with our fleet of boom lifts. Right at the beginning, we need to make special arrangement to transport our bulky equipment to the work site at the top of Genting Highlands. That alone, is no easy feat.

When the new 20^th Century theme park opens in 2019, bring your family and go catch some action. When you are in Genting Highlands and enjoying the amusement rides, do tell your children that our company has played a role to make this breathtaking theme park possible J

(Bangkok) The INTERMAT ASEAN is the Southeast Asia trade show for construction and infrastructure. The trade exhibition brings together over 300 leading companies and brands in one strategic location – IMPACT, Bangkok, Thailand.

Aver Asia (Thailand) Limited was one of the 68 delegates who participated in the event under the wing of IPAF. This greatly emphasized that we entered the Thai market to provide work-at-height solutions and promote work safety, and not just to sell or rent a piece of equipment.

The exhibition was well-attended by a wide range of quality trade visitors – contractors, rental houses, builders, trade associations, manufacturers, government, media, etc. – from around the region.

And very certainly, our team has greeted the visitors with big beautiful smiles to win their hearts over!

Our Thai office has been operational since April 2018. The stunning new branch is situated in Bangna-Trad Road KM30. Currently, the Thai market is a growing market for MEWPs with about a size of 3,500 and houses over 30 rental companies.

The New Talking Point for MEWPs – Southeast Asia Think Global. Act Local.

(Sep 2018) What lies between the 2 established MEWP markets, Singapore and China, is the land of potential. Aver Asia is now recognized globally as one of the biggest rental companies in the Southeast Asia region (Access International, Aug-Sep 2018 Issue).
Our company is recently featured in Access International. The international publication is a reputed industry-focused magazine with high editorial quality and independence from any commercialized pressure.

Our COO, Ben Koh, was interviewed and shared his views about the regional MEWP markets. He cited that MEWPs have slowly replaced rickety structures such as towering timber scaffolding, and gained popularity across Southeast Asia. The change was up-lifted by demand for productivity and safe work-at-height solutions.

Ben gave the international audience a history lesson too. In Singapore, the MEWP evolution started in 1992 with the construction of Suntec City, one of the largest mall in the city state, which also housed the iconic Fountain of Wealth. By the way, the fountain is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest fountain in the world.

With a resilient government, Singapore paved a fast-tracked use and development of MEWPs, much admired by our neighbors. Ben elaborated that when a country is in the industrialization stage, it attracts foreign investments and with that comes a culture of safety and efficiency.

After Singapore, he shared that the other forerunners in Asia are Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. “There are also bright spots, one of which is Myanmar. This is a country with a lot of potentials now… … I think the pace will pick up.” he added.

Currently, Malaysia has a MEWP fleet size of 4,000-5,000. It is still notably far from the 12,000 Singaporean fleets. However, Malaysia is seen by many industry leaders, including our COO, as the next big MEWP market that can greatly influence the growth in Southeast Asia.
One of the challenges currently facing the region and the rest of the world is the lack of skilled field service staff to support MEWPs. Ben candidly addressed as with improved living standards, it is only expected that fewer people want to work under the sun. “Language is also another barrier as they can’t read the manuals.”

We do have our concerns about passing on the trade. In 2016, Aver Asia teamed up with the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) to provide a 3-year training course.

“I have a 10-year vision for Southeast Asia. We know that there is a lot of room for development in some of the countries, which have huge geographical areas. So, our vision is to think global, act local.”

(Sep 2018) Drop your pen and stop whatever you are doing. Give yourself a pat on the shoulder. With the concerted efforts from everyone, Aver Asia has thrived to the 36th spot (up 4 positions) in the Access 50 Rental Fleets, in 2018.

There seem to be some noticeable trends amidst the world’s largest rental companies over the past year. One of which is to buyout and to be dominant in each territory they are in. For example, the Loxam Group, re-securing 3rd position, has newly acquired Spain-based Hune and Italy-based Nacanco.

Another prominent trend that goes hand in hand with the first trend is brand awareness. Many big rental companies are building their brands. It is worth noting that TVH group has undergone a rebranding exercise to be known as Mateco.
Southeast Asia is now in the limelight as the key new market for MEWPs. Among the countries, Singapore is an established and mature market. Aver Asia, is one of three Singapore-based rental companies, in the Access 50 Rental Fleets ranking. The other two rental companies are Galmon and LH Construction & Machinery Leasing.

Aver Asia saw an uptick of 8% in MEWP fleet and 38% in Telehandler fleet in 2018. We, like some of the other key players, are also growing in greatness for the past year – 3 new overseas offices, acquisition of AsiaMac and a new corporate image. This significant stage and such swift strategic expansion can only be made possible by a great “A” team!

(Singapore) We went back to school in the start of the new year. Aver Asia was the Event Anchor at ITE College West on 10 Jan 2018, alongside with SPF, SCDF, IPAF, SISO and many other key players of Workplace Safety & Health. 

Our Trainers worked tirelessly for the entire day; and always carrying a smile. They were well-rewarded by the excited and happy faces from the ITE students. The trainers provided basic MEWP training to the ITE students, but most importantly, inspired the future mechanics and engineers for our industry. We know for sure that today we lift them up, tomorrow they are going to be our support pillars.

The rain went on and on for that day; however, it did not dampen our youths, and some young-at-heart lecturers, to get onto our boom lifts, aerial work platforms and scissor lifts.
